Prevent Automatic Updates from Installing IE7

Microsoft will push IE7 through automatic updates. If you use automatic updates on your network, you better be expecting a lot of questions regarding IE7 that next morning. Or if IE7 breaks something, are you ready for that pain? Here is how to block automatic updates from automatically upgrading IE6 to IE7.

Microsoft will update IE6 to IE7 through automatic updates. You can turn off automatic updates to prevent this from happening.

If you run a large network, however, you may want to stop this network-wide. To prevent the push of IE7 automatic, just make this registry change.

1. Start regedit.exe

2. Create the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Setup\7.0

3. Click the Edit menu and select New and then DWORD value.

4. Name this new DWORD: DoNotAllowIE70

5. Set the value of this DWORD to a value of 1.

You can also download Microsoft's IE7 Blocker Toolkit as another option.
